What a Design System Contains

Design Tokens

The atomic values that define your visual language: colors (primitives and semantic), typography (scale, weights, line heights), spacing (4px grid system), border radii, shadows, and z-index layers. Tokens are platform-agnostic and exportable to CSS variables, JSON, or any format your development team requires.

Component Library

Every UI component your product uses, designed with all possible states: default, hover, active, focused, disabled, error, loading, and empty. Components are organized by category (inputs, navigation, feedback, layout, data display) and documented with usage guidelines, dos and don'ts, and accessibility notes.

Pattern Library

Components assembled into common patterns: login forms, search flows, onboarding sequences, settings pages, dashboard layouts, and empty states. Patterns are documented with interaction specifications and content guidelines, giving designers and developers a clear template for common product needs.

Governance and Documentation

A design system is only useful if the team actually uses it. We establish governance processes: how to propose new components, how to handle edge cases, and how to evolve the system over time. Documentation is published via Storybook, ZeroHeight, or Notion — accessible to designers, developers, and product managers.
